SEER2 Explained: What Efficiency Is Worth in a Texas Cooling Season

Efficiency ratings are one of the few places where the North Texas climate works in your favor. Here is what the number means and how to work out what it is worth to you specifically.

What SEER2 rating do I need in Texas?

Higher ratings pay back faster in Dallas than in most of the country, because payback scales with cooling hours and our season runs April into October. Whether the premium tier is worth it depends on how long you plan to stay and, critically, on the system being sized correctly.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio: cooling output over a season divided by the electrical energy used to produce it. Higher is more efficient. SEER2 is the current version of the test, introduced in 2023, and the important thing to know is that it measures against a higher external static pressure than the old SEER test did — closer to what real ductwork imposes. That makes SEER2 numbers slightly lower than the old SEER numbers for the same equipment. A system is not less efficient than it used to be; the ruler changed.

The reason this matters more in Dallas than in most places is simple arithmetic. An efficiency gain returns money through hours of operation, and this region supplies a great many of them. The same upgrade that takes a long time to pay for itself in a mild climate pays back considerably faster here.

How to estimate payback for your own house

Payback is the extra equipment cost divided by the annual saving. The annual saving depends on your electricity rate and your actual cooling hours, both of which are specific to you — which is why a generic number in a brochure is not worth much.

Rather than quote a figure that will be wrong for your house, here is the calculation to run with your own numbers. Take your summer electricity bills and subtract a shoulder-season month to approximate what cooling actually costs you per year. An efficiency improvement reduces that cooling portion roughly in proportion to the ratio of the two SEER2 ratings — moving from a 14 to a 17, for instance, is roughly a 14/17 reduction in cooling energy, or about 18 percent. Apply that percentage to your annual cooling cost to get the yearly saving, then divide the price difference between the two systems by that saving.

What the estimate assumes, and where it goes wrong

  • Your electricity rate stays roughly stable. Texas retail rates move, and they are the single largest input, so treat the result as a range rather than a figure.
  • The system is correctly sized. An oversized high-SEER2 system short-cycles and will not deliver its rated efficiency.
  • The ductwork is sound. Air lost into a 140-degree attic is lost regardless of the equipment's rating.
  • You keep the house. Payback periods often run past the point at which many owners move.
  • The rating is the whole system. An outdoor unit matched to an incompatible indoor coil does not achieve its rated figure.

Why sizing outranks the rating

If you take one thing from this guide, take this. An air conditioner does two jobs: it lowers temperature and it removes moisture. The second only happens while it is running, because humidity condenses on a cold coil over time. An oversized system cools the air fast, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has dehumidified anything. The house reads 74 and feels clammy, the owner sets it lower, and the problem compounds.

Short-cycling also wears the equipment, because starting a compressor is by far the hardest thing it does. The result is that a correctly sized mid-tier system routinely outperforms and outlasts an oversized premium one. Sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation — square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling heights, duct condition, infiltration — not from a rule of thumb.
