R-22 and Your Older Dallas AC: What the Phase-Out Actually Means

If your system predates about 2010, this probably applies to you. It is not an emergency, and it is not a reason to replace a working system today — but it changes what a leak costs you.

What does the R-22 phase-out mean for my air conditioner?

R-22 has not been produced or imported in the United States since January 2020. Existing systems can still legally be serviced, but only with reclaimed refrigerant from decommissioned equipment. The system does not stop working — a refrigerant leak simply becomes a much more significant event.

The phase-out was a scheduled regulatory step, not a sudden ban. R-22, a hydrochlorofluorocarbon, was wound down under the Montreal Protocol because of its ozone impact, with production and import in the United States ending on 1 January 2020. Nothing was made illegal to own or operate. Systems already installed and charged continue to run indefinitely, and servicing them remains entirely legal.

What changed is supply. The only R-22 now available is reclaimed — recovered from systems being decommissioned, cleaned, and resold. That is a finite and shrinking pool, and it is priced the way finite pools are priced. The practical result for a homeowner is narrow but real: everything about owning the system is unchanged, right up until it loses refrigerant.

How to tell what your system uses

Three ways, easiest first

  • The data plate on the outdoor unit. It states the refrigerant type directly, usually as R-22 or R-410A. This is definitive when the plate is still legible.
  • Installation date. R-410A took over residential equipment through the 2000s, and by roughly 2010 new systems were overwhelmingly R-410A. A system installed before then is a strong R-22 candidate.
  • Service records or the label a technician left on the unit, if anyone has worked on it.

If the plate has weathered past reading, which is common on a unit that has spent fifteen Texas summers outdoors, a technician can identify it from the service ports and the system's age. It is not a difficult determination and it should not carry a charge of its own.

Which applies depends on the size of the leak, where it is, and the system's overall condition. There is no default answer.

The option that is not on this table is a drop-in replacement refrigerant that simply works. Several products are marketed that way. In practice they involve component and lubricant compatibility issues, generally deliver lower capacity than the original R-22 charge, and can complicate any future service because the next technician has to establish what is actually in the system. Treat 'we can just swap the refrigerant' as a claim to ask questions about.

What this does not mean

It does not mean a working R-22 system needs replacing now. A unit that holds its charge and cools properly can carry on doing exactly that. Refrigerant is a sealed loop and is never consumed in normal operation, so a system with no leak never needs more. The phase-out only bites at the moment of a leak — which is also why an annual maintenance visit is worth more on an R-22 system than on a newer one: catching a small leak early is the difference between a manageable repair and a large recharge. If yours is not cooling properly, that is worth investigating sooner rather than later.

Is it illegal to service an R-22 system?

No. Production and import ended in the United States on 1 January 2020, but servicing existing systems with reclaimed refrigerant remains entirely legal. Technicians handling refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, which applies to all refrigerants, not just R-22.

Will R-22 run out completely?

The reclaimed supply shrinks as older systems are decommissioned, so availability declines and pricing reflects that. There is no announced date at which it becomes unobtainable. The practical planning assumption is that it gets progressively less attractive as a repair path over time rather than disappearing overnight.

How much refrigerant does a leaking system lose?

It varies enormously by where the leak is. A pinhole in a coil may take a season to show; a failed connection can empty a system in days. The symptom sequence is usually gradual loss of cooling, then ice forming on the refrigerant line, then the system struggling to cool at all on hot afternoons.

Is R-410A being phased out too?

The industry is transitioning toward lower global-warming-potential refrigerants, and newer equipment is already appearing on those. That transition is structured very differently from the R-22 wind-down and R-410A remains widely available. It is not a reason to defer replacing an R-22 system.
