Will a smart thermostat work in my Dallas home?

Without one, some models try to harvest power by briefly pulsing the heating or cooling circuit, and the symptoms are strange: random restarts, a system that kicks on for a few seconds for no reason, or a thermostat that works until the WiFi radio draws too much.
There are usually three options when the wire is not there: use a spare conductor in the existing cable if one was pulled, add an adapter at the air handler, or run new thermostat wire. Which one applies depends on what is behind your wall, which is why it is worth establishing before choosing a thermostat rather than after.
One other DFW-specific case: if you have a dual-fuel system — a heat pump paired with a gas furnace — the thermostat has to manage the changeover between them. Not every smart thermostat handles dual-fuel properly, and one that does not will run the wrong heat source on a cold morning.
