Can hail damage an air conditioner?
Yes. Hail flattens the thin aluminum fins on the outdoor condenser coil, which is the surface the system uses to release heat. The unit keeps running, so the damage is easy to miss — it shows up as longer runtimes, higher bills, and weaker cooling on the hottest afternoons.
North Texas sits in one of the most hail-active regions in the United States, and the outdoor condenser is one of the most exposed pieces of equipment a house owns. What takes the damage is not the cabinet, which is sheet metal and shrugs most of it off, but the coil behind the grille. That coil is a dense array of very thin aluminum fins wrapped around refrigerant tubing, and its entire job is surface area.
Hail lays those fins over. A flattened fin does two things: it stops conducting heat efficiently, and it blocks the airflow path through the coil. The result is a system that cannot reject heat as fast as it was designed to, which forces it to run at higher head pressure to achieve the same cooling. Nothing breaks. What to check after a storm season

- Look for debris driven into the fins. Storms deposit as much as they damage, and the two compound.
- Look at the fan blades through the top grille for chips or bends, which cause imbalance and vibration.

Fins can often be combed straight again with a fin comb, restoring a substantial part of the lost airflow.
