Thermostat Not Working

Why is my thermostat not working?

A dark thermostat usually means it lost power, and surprisingly often the thermostat itself is fine. The common cause is a tripped condensate float switch cutting the circuit upstream. Try fresh batteries first, then look for a full drain pan at the indoor air handler before replacing anything.

Follow the symptom. Why it is usually not the thermostat

A thermostat is a switch and a sensor. When the display goes dark, any link in that chain can be the reason — and the thermostat is statistically the least likely one.

What actually tends to be at fault

  • A tripped condensate float switch. The same safety device behind most no-power calls in Dallas. Look for standing water in the drain pan.
  • A blown low-voltage fuse on the control board. Usually a small automotive-style fuse, and it blows because something shorted, so replacing it without finding the short just blows another.
  • A failed transformer, which supplies the 24 volts the thermostat runs on.
  • Missing C-wire on a smart thermostat. Many older Dallas homes were wired before a common wire was standard, and a smart stat trying to power itself by pulsing the heating circuit will behave erratically rather than simply dying.
