The most common reason a Dallas system pushes warm air on a hot day is an outdoor condenser that has quietly stopped running while the indoor blower keeps going - and the usual culprit is a run capacitor that gave out in the heat.

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Warm air with the indoor fan still running almost always means the outdoor condenser has stopped. In Dallas summers the usual cause is a failed run capacitor, which bakes out after weeks above 100 degrees. Step outside: indoor blower running but outdoor fan still confirms it.

Walk out to your outdoor unit and look at the big fan. If it's dead still and silent while air is still moving inside, the outdoor unit lost power or a starting component - a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, or a burned contactor - so it can't reject any heat. If instead that fan is spinning and the compressor is humming along but the vents still blow warm, shift your attention to refrigerant or the thermostat: a charge that's leaked out can't absorb heat, and a stat bumped to "heat" or "fan on" will move room-temperature air all day.

The good news is that the most frequent cause is also among the cheapest - a capacitor or contactor is a small, standard part. Where it gets more serious is refrigerant. If the warm air traces to a lost charge, someone has to find and seal the leak, and on an older R-22 system that repair competes with the cost of the increasingly scarce refrigerant itself. A compressor that has failed outright is the expensive end of the scale, and on a system past a dozen years it usually points toward replacement rather than repair.

  • The outdoor unit. Walk out and look at the big fan. Still and silent while the indoor blower runs is the single most useful observation you can make.
  • The breaker panel. Many systems have separate breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, so the outdoor half can lose power on its own.
  • The filter. A badly loaded filter starves the coil and can end in ice, which stops cooling entirely.

What not to do: do not open the electrical panel on the condenser to look at the capacitor. A run capacitor stores a charge after the power is off, and it does not care that the disconnect is pulled. That one is genuinely a service call.
